Advanced Composites over Aluminium

thermal conductivity

Advanced composites have a very low coefficient of thermal conductivity. Structures made from composite materials do not conduct heat. Any localised fire will not transmit heat to other parts of the structure and so will remain localised. Also with the use of low flame spread materials as classi- fied by BS 476, Part 1, a fire will re- main local and so is easily suppres- sed. Even after a fire, the structure still has structural integrity support.

Break-discs of Formula 1 cars and the nose of the Space Shuttle are made of carbon fibre which can withstand temperatures of up to 1650 °C without any degredating effects.
All metal structures, including aluminium alloy have a high coeffi- cient of thermal conductivity which, when subjected to an open fire will cause a rapid build up of temperature which may result in flash fires being started in neighbouring rooms or compartments.

Aluminium alloy permanently looses its strength at temperatures above 200 C, and will completely melt at 650 C. Therefore, any fire that affects adjoining structures to the extent of 200 C or more will contribute to structural collapse.
